So, I decided to tweak the idea a bit to use alphabet letters and twine. I think this might be something that can ride on through the summer. I used these letters. They were $1 apiece:
Using a glue gun, I attached the twine and started wrapping. You have to be a little careful going around the curves so the twine doesn't bunch too much on the inside of the curves.
J and C were pretty easy.....F was not bad and A was a real you-know-what! However, it only took about 5-10 minutes for each one and it was pretty cheap!
Next up....we've got letters.....on the mantel.

They look adorable! So creative. I'm sure they are your family's initials, but I was seriously trying to spell a word with them. No luck. :P

You asked how long it took to paint my stairs -
I worked on them for about 4 hours every day for almost a week. Bleh. But, TOTALLY worth it. I will admit I was really lazy by the time I got to the stairs and only sanded the hand railing. The white portion was primed and then had two coats of paint. The hand rail was sanded, had two coats of gel stain, and one coat of poly. It was a long process, but made a huge difference.
